Join local naturalists, Homewaters' staff and Board, and your neighbors for the inaugural "Walk For Education," a joint fundraiser for Homewaters Project and the NSCC Education Fund. Each participant will join a trained guide to walk 2-3 miles along the route of Thornton Creek's lush south fork. Homewaters and the NSCC Ed Fund will provide coffee beforehand and a BBQ lunch afterward. Participating in the walk is free; however, walkers are encouraged to collect donations from sponsors prior to the walk. In order to participate in the full day’s events, including lunch and prizes, participants are asked to contribute at least $10. To register, contact our office at 206.526.0187 or download the registration packet.

Opportunities for Teachers

Water and Community: Seattle and Shoreline Middle School teachers have the opportunity to receive training, curriculum, classroom support, and computer mapping software this winter for Homewaters Project’s engaging Water and Community program. Water and Community uses GIS technology to help students investigate the health of their watershed. Training is in November, with the program in December to February. Contact Todd Burley at 206.526.0187 today to sign up!

Land and Water: Homewaters is pleased to again provide the Land and Water field program, which extends the learning from the 4th/5th grade Land and Water science unit for schools near or in the Thornton Creek Watershed. Scheduling begins in January and programs take place from March to June. Contact Linda Versage at 206.529.6045 as soon as possible for more information.

Tiny Neighbors: If you teach the “Microworlds” science unit, have been previously trained in the Tiny Neighbors field program, and would like to do the program with your students -- or would like to get trained this year, contact Linda Versage, at 206.529.6045. The training is tentatively planned for the end of January. Fall field trips are available for scheduling now, and will be available in spring as well.

Volunteer Opportunities

Classroom GIS Assistants: Homewaters seeks qualified volunteers to assist in middle and high school classrooms with our Water and Community program this winter. Volunteer training will be in November; you’ll provide classroom support between December and February. Contact Todd Burley at 206.526.0187 for more information.

Garden Education and Maintenance (GEM) Team: During this academic year, Homewaters will develop a new program to train a small group to assist schools that have previously participated in our Watershed Gardens program to help ensure the native plant gardens continue to provide education, beauty, ecological benefits, and a point of pride for local schools. Volunteers might teach simple lessons to students, teachers, or families about native plants and water-wise gardening and help with garden maintenance. If you are available mid-week and this interests you, contact Linda Versage at 206.529.6045.

Stewards Breakfast
